This painting was inspired by a visit to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. I was on the lookout for very old trees in the state of Virginia, which prompted the visit to the cemetery. These locations are perfect for spotting old specimens. After driving into the driveway, I looked over to see trees that looked like redwoods. Sure enough, the tags on the trees indicated that I was right. California redwoods in Virginia. How lovely and amazing.

Walking through the woods is one of my favorite things to do. Every once in a while the light will come blazing through the trees in a magnificent way. Only happens when I am walking at a particular time of day during a particular time of year. When it does, it darn near takes my breath away. Had to capture this moment in a pastel painting.
