I feel strongly that spending time in a different culture and seeing new things sparks inspiration. Therefore, I would suggest that we spend time making art, but also spend time immersing ourselves in the culture. As a tour leader at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery for over 20 years, I love sharing my insight into artwork that we encounter while on tours.”

Why Arles?
Whether you're captivated by art, history, or simply the charm of a picturesque town, Arles is worth every moment of your visit. From exploring the ancient Roman ruins to immersing yourself in Van Gogh's artistic legacy, this Provencal gem is a great place in which to devote your time.
The Roman history of Arles harks back to 46BC, when Julius Caesar established a colony there. The town has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1981 and boasts many ancient ruins, including a Roman theatre, the baths of Constantine and a cryptoporticus (subterranean vaulted galleries). But Arles’s most prominent example of Roman architecture is its impressive amphitheater, which in its heyday could accommodate up to 21,000 spectators to its gladiatorial combats. This amphitheater is walking distance from our hotel.
For Van Gogh lovers, Arles is a must see city. Van Gogh was fascinated and inspired by the light in Arles, and even invited Paul Gaugin there. Inspired by Arles, Van Gogh produced 187 paintings while there for only one year. We will walk in Van Gogh's footsteps and find a dozen spots where Van Gogh set up his easel.

Lynn is such an intuitive teacher. She meets you at whatever level you are on as an artist, knows exactly what you need and works tirelessly to get you where you want to be as an artist. I always learn something new and exciting from Lynn and just having the opportunity to have the week with her to pick her brain and feed on her expertise is an experience I will always be grateful for. — Sandy S.
Le Calendal Hotel is a unique boutique hotel which sits near the astonishing Roman amphitheater. Staying at Le Calendal is a lovely experience where you will combine your love of art-making with your interest in history. Joan (our tour operator) has personally stayed at the lovely Le Calendal multiple times, and was charmed by the perfect location steps away from the fascinating history of Arles. The kindness and warmth of the owners of the hotel cannot be photographed, but expect to be enchanted. We may set up our easels there with the opportunity to paint to our heart’s content. If it is raining, we will have an indoor space in which to work. |

About Joan (Tour Coordinator)
In 2008, the seed of Artful Journeys was planted in her brain, when Joan brought together all of her life's passions - her love of music, an affinity for the beautiful things in life, and an ability to organize events - to give birth to Artful Journeys, a program of art education trips for the soul.
Joan was born and raised in the apple country of the Hudson River Valley in New York; her father was a gentle, very tolerant, educated land surveyor, and her mother was the efficient business administrator and home engineer. The youngest of four children, Joan was encouraged to pursue anything she wanted, but also to do her best. Sometimes that was difficult, especially
succeeding three very accomplished siblings.
