Pastel and Oil Supply Lists

If you are traveling to a workshop with me, please take a look at this video about packing art supplies.
Picture

What you will need for water mixable oil workshop:

- 5x7 inches sketchbook
- pencils (2B and 4H and white charcoal pencil)

Cobra Water Mixable Oil Paints unless noted:
* Primary Magenta or Alizarin Crimson
* Cadmium Red Light
* Cadmium Yellow Medium
* Cadmium Yellow Lemon
Sap Green (not necessary, but if you would like to purchase)
* Primary Cyan Blue or Cobalt Blue
* Ultramarine Blue (Daniel Smith)
Prussian Blue (not necessary, but a nice dark warmer blue)

*Titanium White (large tube)
*Ivory or Mars Black

Acrylic paint for underpainting:
*I enjoy using Golden liquid paints. You may select any middle value paint (not to dark or too light) One color that is particularly nice for landscapes is quinacridone nickel azo gold

*These are your absolute must-have colors. What is represented here is a primary color palette, and this will keep your costs down.

A word about water mixable oil paints: I love them. My favorite brand is Cobra by Royal Talens. I can't find Ultramarine Blue that is the color that I prefer in this brand, so I buy from other manufacturers such as Daniel Smith, Duo Aqua Oil by Holbein, or Windsor/Newton water mixable oils.

Canvas:
Please read this entire paragraph. You may use whatever I have mentioned here. You will need one per day ( I recommend 9x12, 11x14 or 16x20 inch stretched canvas on stretcher bars unless you are traveling on a foreign workshop. If you are traveling with me overseas, I recommend lightweight painting panels. Another option is to tape unstretched canvas onto foamcore boards, which is a lighter option. You may also use Multimedia Art Boards which are an inexpensive solution and are a wonderful surface on which to paint.

Brushes:
A variety of sizes. I like flats and brights, but use what you enjoy.  (IMPORTANT- When using water mixable oils, you will be best served using synthetic brushes because hog bristle brushes will not handle being soaked in water.)

Other items :
Palette knife (You may use painting knives)
Plastic water containers (two)

Roll of paper towels (I like rolls of blue shop towels available at the paint department of hardware stores)
Palette (you may use paper palettes)
Water mixable oil painting medium (this is optional)
Water mixable oil painting quick dry medium (please buy Cobra Brand only)

Q-Tips (you will need a lot of these, not 3 or 4😉)
A jar that can tightly close

Reference Material:
Landscape photographs will be required for reference. Have an assortment to choose from so that we may look at them and discuss. Note: You may bring an iPad to use. Please do not use your cell phone as the images are too small to be helpful.

What you will need for pastel class or workshop:
Please note: there is a separate supply list for my online course, Build Color Confidence, using only 6 pastels

Recommended pastels and papers
- Uart paper 400 grit —These are sanded papers (I will have paper available for purchase)
- Cardboard portfolio, foam core board or a drawing board to transport work and as a rigid surface on which to tape work
- Nupastel pastel set or Faber Castell or Cretacolor- price varies depending on size of set, buy as many colors as affordable (We will discuss other brands) A word about pastels; unlike wet mediums, you do not mix colors with pastels. Therefore, it is imperative that you have enough colors and values (darks and lights) to make successful pastel paintings. Please buy as many as you can afford. For beginners, I recommend the 96 color box of Prismacolor Nupastels.

Other items
- 5x7 inches sketchbook
- pencils (2B and 4H and white charcoal pencil)
- Kneaded eraser
- One inch wide flat oil painting brush
- Artist’s tape (I recommend 1 inch or larger black artist's tape)
- Watercolors and inexpensive watercolor brushes (We will not use these early in a class that is 8 weeks in duration. Please wait until first class prior to buying or bringing these. For workshops, I will contact students before the workshop to instruct whether we will be using watercolor)
- Wax paper, freezer paper, or glassine paper to cover your work for transport and protection
- Baby wipes
- Roll of paper towels (I like rolls of blue shop towels available at the paint department of hardware stores)
- Picture Perfect Viewfinder
- Color Wheel

Reference Material:
Landscape photographs, or small paintings will be required for reference. Have an assortment to choose from so that we may look at them and discuss. Note: You may bring an iPad to use. Please do not use your cell phone as the images are too small to be helpful.
