The Steward

I was selected as one of 15 artists in the United States to participate in the CARAVAN exhibition. CARAVAN is a multi-cultural exhibit that showcased artwork from 15 artists from the US, 30 Egyptian artists, 2 artists from the UK, and 1 artist from France. The artists came from Christian, Jewish and Muslim backgrounds. Each artist was given a sculptural prayer form on which to make art. The finished work was displayed at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, from 31 August until 6 October, 2014. Then the work was displayed at the Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York City from 12 October until 23 November, 2014.
The idea behind The Steward
Trees have been a central symbol of transcendence, immortality, and life in almost every culture. Without trees, we would no longer be able to exist, since they create the very air that we breathe. Without working together as groups and individuals, humans would no longer exist either. With this idea in mind, my figure is embracing trees. This image symbolically indicates that we are stewards of the land and of one another. We are all connected, and can provide comfort in times of trouble, and joy in positive moments. Our roots may help to define us, and lead us to a better understanding of others if we so choose.
