Weekly classes

Weekly painting classes with Lynn Goldstein are an opportunity to develop painting skills and make friends with other students along the way. Lynn provides a fun, enriching environment where students learn from her and from each other.

Pastel Painting (Weekly Classes at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, VA)

When: First class begins on THURSDAY, June 25, 2020

This class meets weekly for 8 weeks
ABOUT OUR CLASSES
This class will include various approaches to the soft pastel medium to help encourage students to develop their personal style. Several techniques will be explored to complete pastel paintings for a deeper understanding of this versatile medium. Fundamentals of design, composition and color will be discussed. Students will use their own resource materials to compose paintings. Instruction will be provided to determine how best to complete a painting with photographic resource material. Appropriate for students of all levels with drawing experience.
(Beginners should bring drawing materials, intermediate and advanced students should bring their pastel supplies to the first class.)

ADDITIONAL SUPPLY LIST DETAILS
What you will need for pastel class or workshop:
- 5x7 inches sketchbook
- pencils (2B and 4H and white charcoal pencil)
- Uart paper 400 grit —These are sanded papers (I will have paper available for purchase)
- Cardboard portfolio, foam core board or a drawing board to transport work and as a rigid surface on which to tape work
- Nupastel pastel set or Faber Castell or Cretacolor- price varies depending on size of set, buy as many colors as affordable (We will discuss other brands)

- Kneaded eraser
- One inch wide flat oil painting brush
- Artist’s tape (I recommend 1 inch or larger black artist's tape)
- Watercolors and inexpensive watercolor brushes (We will not use these early in a class that is 8 weeks in duration. Please wait until first class prior to buying or bringing these. For workshops, I will contact students before the workshop to instruct whether we will be using watercolor)
- Wax paper, freezer paper, or glassine paper to cover your work for transport and protection
- Baby wipes
- Roll of paper towels (I like rolls of blue shop towels available at the paint department of hardware stores)

A word about pastels; unlike wet mediums, you do not mix colors with pastels. Therefore, it is imperative that you have enough colors and values (darks and lights) to make successful pastel paintings. Please buy as many as you can afford. For beginners, I recommend the 96 color box of Prismacolor Nupastels.

"I have learned much from Lynn already and have much more to learn. I look forward to more lessons with Lynn"
