This soothing painting was inspired by a location close to my home, but it reminds me of my childhood walking in the snow with my mother. During her high school years, my sister worked evenings in a country club office. Occasionally, she would walk home, and my mother and I would meet her half way. I still remember my mother (no admirer of snow) saying that she loved hearing the snow crunch under her feet. It's a wonderful memory.

One of my favorite birds is the great blue heron. Often while I am out and about and end up seeing a heron, I don't see it immediately. I will be looking at a beautiful scene, and realize that a heron is stalking its next meal, motionless. This painting captures the silent calm that they seem to have when waiting for prey. I truly enjoy working in series. This painting is part of a series of paintings inspired by a magazine from the 1950s that my mother (and first art teacher) collected. I never forgot leafing through these magazines as a child and teenager. The paintings from the series look nothing like the images in the magazines, but those images provide a jumping-off point for me to explore abstracted landscape imagery.
